Hello all, I hope that you and yours had a safe and warm week and that
you have gotten yourself dug out from this past weeks storms.
Saturday we got an additional 8" here and Sunday was shovel snow day.
We received an additional 2" on Wednesday morning when more snow came our way.
Wednesday morning the news was reporting that State and Local cops had worked
more than 240 wrecks before 10am. Wow! that's a lot of wrecks.

Last weekend I spent Saturday at home running the Skywarn Area 1 & 2 Nets
for 11 hours so, weather reports could be passed to the NWS office in
Wakefield Virginia. This allowed members of the Skywarn VE Team to do
assist with testing at last weeks FrostFest event here in Richmond.
I was very happy that I was able to make it possible for members to the VE
team to be at the event. This gave me time to also, work on homework(YUCK).

Yes, the FrostFest folks held the event in spite of the lousy weather. I understand
that some vendors didn't show due to the weather. I understand that attendance
was also affected by the weather. Lets hope that next years event will have a tab
bit of better weather.

This weekend weather forecasters are calling for more winter weather to
possibly pay us a visit Friday night and Saturday. The weather forecasters
are also, calling for the possibility for more snow on Monday and Tuesday.
As it gets closer to the weekend the forecaster will better track of the storm
and if it will bring more of the white stuff. So, stay tuned.

Tonight: A slight chance of snow after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 24. Calm wind becoming north between 6 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Saturday: A slight chance of snow before 10am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 36. North wind between 8 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Presidents' Day: Rain and snow likely after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Monday Night: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

New Licensing Procedure for the Bahamas (C6)

The old PUC procedure and licensing on an annual renewal basis is gone. As of August 9, 2009, the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) has taken over all telecommunications licensing. The following is the new procedure per URCA:

Go to the URCA web site, www.urcabahamas.bs download the application and complete parts A and B only. Send to URCA, P.O. Box N-4860, Fourth Terrace East, Collins Avenue, Nassau, Bahamas (same address as PUC) with a $10.00 application fee and a $25.00 license fee; total $35.00 and specify the dates you will be operating from the Bahamas (a money order is quicker than a check). Include a copy of your US license. In turn, URCA will send you a license to operate for that period. You may specify the call sign you wish, but they have been issuing call signs similar to your US call sign. These are reciprocal licenses, not permanent annual licenses. Leave a lot of leeway time for the URCA to respond prior to your trip.

If you are renewing a previous C6 license, specify the call sign issued and they will give you permission to use that call sign (normally) during your operating period. The rest of the above is the same.

From very recent experience, do not add any unnecessary information or requests which will confuse the people who handle the licenses. KISS is the rule. A necessary trip to Nassau can be the result of violating that rule!

Increasing sunspot activity continues. A glance at the image from
the STEREO mission (http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/) shows a string of
active regions in the Sun's northern hemisphere, both visible and
over the horizon on the far side.

The high sunspot number for the week was 71 on February 8, and the
average for the week was 43.3. We haven't reported a weekly average
that high since the week of March 27 through April 4 in 2008, when
it was 43.6. The daily sunspot number hasn't been as high as 71
since May 28, 2006 when it was 78. The earlier reading that reached
that level or more was 105 on April 6, 2006.

On February 8 when the daily sunspot number was 71, the total area
covered by sunspot activity was 460 millionths of a solar
hemisphere. That measure hasn't been that high since the same
earlier week in 2008 that had a high sunspot number average. The
dates were March 26-27, 2008 when the area of sunspots was 520 and
510.

The latest forecast has the solar flux index for today, February 12
at 90, followed by 92 on February 13, 94 on February 14-16, 93 on

Geophysical Institute Prague sees unsettled conditions February
12-13, unsettled to active February 14, unsettled February 15, quiet
to unsettled February 16, and quiet February 17-18.

Sunspot numbers for February 4 through 10 were 11, 22, 30, 51, 71,
63, and 55 with a mean of 43.3. 10.7 cm flux was 73.9, 77.8, 87.5,
90.3, 93.7, 91.4, and 91.3 with a mean of 86.6. Estimated planetary
A indices were 2, 3, 4, 3, 3, 3 and 3 with a mean of 3. Estimated
mid-latitude A indices were 2, 0, 2, 2, 3, 1 and 1 with a mean of
1.6.

MARCONI RADIO CLUB OF NEWFOUNDLAND INC.

The 6 metre beacon (VO1ZA) operates on the campus of Memorial University and was designed and installed by members of the MUN ARC in June of 1990. It operates on a frequency of 50.0400 MHz (space) 50.0395 MHz (mark) FSK CW with 1.5 watts output to a 0.27 wave gamma fed vertical (omni). The beacon is maintained by the Marconi Radio Club of Newfoundland. Following an electrical storm, the beacon was off the air for several days. Service was restored on 1500 UTC 5 September 2005.

A 2 metre CW transatlantic beacon is operating on 144.400 MHz,+-0.5 kHz transmitting with an ERP of 2.2 kW and beaming 60 degrees.

A 2 metre FM beacon transmitts audio Morse on 146.31 MHz. This beacon has been on the air since 14 September 1986 and has been used to study seasonal variability in local VHF propagation. It also serves as a bench mark for repeater antenna receiving performance in the region.

A long wave beacon is in operation on 137.7770 kHz
