BT3WX Special Event Station Celebrates Launch of XW-1 Amateur Satellite
To celebrate the launch of China's first amateur satellite, XW-1,
AMSAT-China will set up a special event station in Taiyuan, Shanxi
Province of China using the callsign BT3WX. The station plans to
operate on all HF amateur bands from 10 to 160 meters and on VHF/UHF
amateur satellite bands, including FM, SSB, CW, RTTY and PACSAT modes.

Operations at BT3WX have already commenced and the special event
station will remain active until XW-1 is launched. A specific launch
date has not been released as of press time, but is expected in
mid-December.

A team of 200 participants will consist of radio amateurs from all
around China, teachers and students, the State Radio Regulation Bureau
of China, the China Association for Science Technology, the Chinese
Society of Astronautics and the Chinese Radio Sports Association
officials, as well as journalists will participate in the operation of
BT3WX. Their goal is to inspire enthusiasm for amateur radio satellite
communications activities in China among radio amateurs and young peo-
ple learning satellite communication technology and space knowledge.

THE BT3WX operating team is as follows:

The equipment at the HF Station includes an Icom IC-756PROIII and

From One End of HF to the Other: The ARRL 160 Meter and 10 Meter Contests
Both MF and HF offer a lot of breathing room for all interests in Amateur Radio. As the 2009-2010 Contest Season continues, two single-band events in December will highlight the magic of the opposite ends of the shortwave spectrum: the ARRL 160 Meter Contest and ARRL 10 Meter Contest.
Until relatively recently, operations on 160 meters in the US were limited to certain portions of the band -- as well as different day/night power levels -- due to the LORAN radio-navigation operations that occupied 1.8-2 MHz. Today, amateurs are allowed to run full legal power anywhere on the band.
According to ARRL Contest Branch Manager Sean Kutzko, KX9X, many operators have never tried 160 meters -- often called topband -- due to the size requirements of full-size antennas. "A dipole for 160 meters would be around 245 feet long -- not too many hams have that kind of real estate," he explained. "Fortunately, verticals and inverted-L antennas will allow you to make plenty of QSOs on that band. In fact, try loading up anything you can -- many a 160 meter QSO has been made with a 40 meter dipole through an antenna tuner. You'll be able to work stations all night long, after the ionosphere's D layer dissipates along with its absorption of MF signals."
The 160 Meter Contest is a CW-only event. Participants need to work as many ARRL/RAC sections as possible, as well as listen for DX stations. US stations send a signal report and their ARRL/RAC section, while DX stations only send a signal report. DX stations may work stations in offshore and non-contiguous US states and possessions (KH6, KL7, Pacific and Caribbean US prefixes) in the contest.
At the top of the HF spectrum lies 10 meters. Even though 10 meters has been rather flat as of late -- due to our being near the bottom of the solar cycle -- there are still plenty of opportunities for QSOs, thanks to winter sporadic-E propagation. "Any 10 meter operator will tell you the band has a funny way of opening up during this contest when many stations are calling CQ," Kutzko said.
Antennas are much smaller for 10 meters than for 160; a dipole for 10 meters can be built in a couple of hours and is only 16.5 feet long. Kutzko advises Technician class licensees not to forget that they have SSB operating privileges on 10 meters from 28.3-28.5 MHz: "This is a good weekend to try your hand on this band and make some QSOs."
In the ARRL 10 Meter Contest, US and Canadian stations exchange a signal report, as well as their state or province; DX stations send a signal report and a serial number. "Lots of people will be on for this event," Kutzko said. "Last year, we received 1892 entries from all over the world. That's not too bad for being at the bottom of the sunspot cycle."
The ARRL 160 Meter Contest runs from 2000 UTC Friday, December 4 through 1559 UTC Sunday, December 6. The ARRL 10 Meter Contest runs from 0000 UTC Saturday, December 12 through 2359 UTC Sunday, December 13.

UK TOWNSHIP OK'S 11 METER HIGH HAM RADIO TOWER
Meantime, some good antenna related news for a ham in Stetton In the U.K.. That's where an amateur radio tower mast which is more than 11 meters high has been given the go ahead by town planners.
Members of Stretton Parish Council had objected to the proposed tower and antenna based on visual impact when the mast was raised. There were also four objections from the ham operators neighbors who claimed it would be out of keeping with the area and could interfere with TV reception in the area.
But the committee was given expert evidence that U.K. telecommunications regulator Ofcom is the agency with jurisdiction over the antenna and that therefore it should not be a consideration. The Radio Society of Great Britain told the planners that the installation of the hams tower and antenna could be of value to the area for use in emergency situations.
After hearing that when retracted that the tower will only be about 5 meters high and weighing all the other evidence before it, the borough council’s development control committee backed the plans. An 11 meter high tower is roughly 36 feet here in the USA. (Southgate News)

Recent sunspot activity--which ended on November 22--pushed up the
moving average we've been tracking for several years. Because we
have all the data for November, we now have the most recent 3-month
average of daily sunspot numbers, which centers on October. For
2009, the 3 month moving average centered on January through October
was 2.19, 2.02, 1.49, 2.01, 4.23, 5.2, 4, 4, 4.64 and 7.1. The
latest value is the highest since April 2008, when it was 8.89.

The monthly averages of daily sunspot numbers are also rising,
although not as smoothly as the three month average. The monthly
averages for March through November 2009 are 0.77, 1.27, 3.97, 6.6,
5.07, 0.39, 6.6, 7 and 7.7. The November average is the highest
since March, 2008 when it was 15.87.

Current projections show a steady quiet planetary A index of 5 for
December 4, then 8 for December 5-6, and back to 5 through the end
of the month. Solar flux predictions show December 4-6 at 72, 73 on
December 7-10, then 75 on December 11-23. The predicted solar flux
value of 75 seems to correspond to the return of an active region
that we can see emerging from the dark spot on STEREO. An area that
looked promising a few days ago has moved over the horizon and not
produced any sunspots.

Geophysical Institute Prague predicts quiet to unsettled conditions
December 4, unsettled December 5, and quiet December 6-10.

The same 45 day forecast from NOAA and US Air Force referenced above
also predicted a planetary A index of 5 for December 3, but in fact
all indices that day were zero, according to
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ftpdir/indices/DGD.txt. The last time the
planetary A index was five or above was November 24-26. The
directory at http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ftpmenu/forecasts/45DF.html
has links to the daily forecast for the past few weeks. By sampling
the forecasts, you can see that the forecasters seem to prefer a
planetary A index of 5 for their minimum value. Five is an indicator
of very stable and quiet conditions, but in fact conditions have
been even quieter.

Low geomagnetic activity should be good for the ARRL 160-Meter CW
Contest this weekend. And, perhaps we will see some sunspots return
for the ARRL 10-Meter Contest the following weekend.

Sunspot numbers for November 26 through December 2 were 0, 0, 0, 0,
0, 0, and 0 with a mean of 0. 10.7 cm flux was 74.7, 73.7, 72.9,
72.1, 72.4, 72.2, and 71.4 with a mean of 72.8. Estimated planetary
A indices were 6, 2, 3, 1, 2, 0 and 1 with a mean of 2.1. Estimated
mid-latitude A indices were 3, 0, 2, 1, 1, 0 and 0 with a mean of 1.

MARCONI RADIO CLUB OF NEWFOUNDLAND INC.

The 6 metre beacon (VO1ZA) operates on the campus of Memorial University and was designed and installed by members of the MUN ARC in June of 1990. It operates on a frequency of 50.0400 MHz (space) 50.0395 MHz (mark) FSK CW with 1.5 watts output to a 0.27 wave gamma fed vertical (omni). The beacon is maintained by the Marconi Radio Club of Newfoundland. Following an electrical storm, the beacon was off the air for several days. Service was restored on 1500 UTC 5 September 2005.

A 2 metre CW transatlantic beacon is operating on 144.400 MHz,+-0.5 kHz transmitting with an ERP of 2.2 kW and beaming 60 degrees.

A 2 metre FM beacon transmitts audio Morse on 146.31 MHz. This beacon has been on the air since 14 September 1986 and has been used to study seasonal variability in local VHF propagation. It also serves as a bench mark for repeater antenna receiving performance in the region.

A long wave beacon is in operation on 137.7770 kHz
