Amateur Radio Tid Bits

KG4KWW's picture

Hello all, I hope that you and yours had a safe wonderful Thanksgiving
with friends or family. If you are traveling, please be careful as there
will be a lot of traffic on the roads.

Have you made up your Christmas List for Santa?

Momma has informed me that there will be a moratorium on spending this year
due to the economy and the fact that I'm back in college. Oh well,
guess I will have to wait yet another year for that IC756-PROIII.

Don't forget about this weekends special event(s) and contest(s):
get on the air this weekend and make some new and exiciting friends, not to mention some contacts.

HAM RADIO NEWS
**********************************************************************************************************************************
Railroad Depots on the Air
Railroad depots were once the focus of a community. Our organization seeks to recognize the former importance of these structures, as well as provide interesting operating events. Many people live within short distance of a current or past railroad depot, so there are many opportunities for community events, public setups, or just setting in the parking lot with a mobile rig.
Rob, W0JRM, will attempt to activate IA-0001/S, the site of the CRI&P depot on the former location of the Golden State Route in Centerville, Iowa on the weekend of Nov 28-29 on 40m CW.

New Ham Radio antenna installed on the ISSARISS From AMSAT NEWS

US Hardware Manager Lou McFadin, W5DID says that all the teamwork and effort to expand the ARISS amateur radio station aboard the ISS were successful this weekend when the new dual band 2m/70CM antenna was installed on the outside of ESA's Columbus module.

Lou congratulated the team, "This is an example of what can be achieved by volunteer hams working closely with a space agency. This antenna project was funded entirely by AMSAT-NA and volunteers who built the antennas for both an ESA experiment and for ARISS. I am very proud of all the teamwork and effort that has gone into this project."

The new ARISS antenna is very similar to the antennas already on the Russian service module. Once the antennas are in place the ARISS team will be working to bring amateur radio to the Columbus module.

Hurricane Watch Net to Hold On the Air Event
Dave Lefavour, W7GOX, Manager of the Hurricane Watch Net, has announced that the HWN will be holding a two-day, on-the-air special event. “This event, which we’re calling ‘HWN/44,’ celebrates our 44th consecutive year of service. Our members will be using special event callsign K4H on 11/29 and 11/30. We’ll be operating on 14.325 MHz, of course, but, we’ll also have stations active on or near 7.190 Mhz and 3.950 MHz. As trying as HF propagation has recently been, if you can’t hear us on one band, try one of the others. Our net control stations/members, located around the continental US, in Canada, and, the Caribbean, will all use K4H as we pass the virtual baton from member to member.” Lefavour noted that November 30 is the official end of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season. “During hurricanes, we focus our energy and attention on the the Atlantic basin, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. For this event, our antennas will be pointed in all compass directions, as we invite hams around the world to help us celebrate our 44th year.”

USER PRINTED QSL’s

Lefavour says that the HWN webmasters have cooked up something special for this event. “ Stations who work us will be able to print their own QSL certificates from our website www.hwn.org. Once our net control stations sign off, they will enter the contact data into our online database. There will be a prominent link displayed on our home page which directs users seeking QSL’s for this special event operation to the appropriate web page. Users can enter their callsign into the search engine, and, if the QSO is found, the certificate will be displayed for local printing. No postage or envelopes required!”

For more information on the HWN/44 operation, or for more information on the HWN, visit the website at www.hwn.org

SKYWARN Recognition Day December 4 & 5
SKYWARN Recognition Day event will be held at the Wakefield WFO from 8 PM Friday, December 4 through 8 PM Saturday, December 5. Unlike last year, we plan to be on the air for the entire 24 hour period, and we invite you and your friends to come out and operate! Refreshments will be available around the clock.

We will be running SSB (and possibly PSK31) between 80 and 10 meters, and will also be available for simplex and repeater contacts, including Echolink and IRLP, on 2m and 70cm.

If you've never been to the Wakefield WFO and want to come hang out for a few hours, you are welcome to come down, but you must pre-register for a time slot to ensure we can fit you in (literally... it's a tight squeeze in our little corner of the office!)

Also, if you've never operated HF or have never run any of the digital modes, we will have control operators present during the entire event to walk you through it. Last year we put together a Special Event & Contest Primer handbook and you can still access that at http://go.wx4akq.org/contestguide.

This year we're opening up the radio desk to any licensed amateur who wants to participate, regardless of whether they are an official member of the Wakefield SKYWARN Amateur Radio Support Team. Non-members wishing to secure a time slot can contact KG4PEQ@WX4AKQ.org.

Genesis Radio Multi-band SDR kit
An Australian company will be producing a new multi-band low power Software Defined Radio (SDR) transceiver kit.

The Genesis G59 transceiver will cover the Amateur bands from 1.8 to 54 MHz and produce up to 10 watts output with the GPA10 amplifier.

A version with extended band coverage, the G59D, covering the increasingly popular 70 MHz band should be available next year.

Further information on the G59 is available at

MARCONI RADIO CLUB OF NEWFOUNDLAND INC.

The 6 metre beacon (VO1ZA) operates on the campus of Memorial University and was designed and installed by members of the MUN ARC in June of 1990. It operates on a frequency of 50.0400 MHz (space) 50.0395 MHz (mark) FSK CW with 1.5 watts output to a 0.27 wave gamma fed vertical (omni). The beacon is maintained by the Marconi Radio Club of Newfoundland. Following an electrical storm, the beacon was off the air for several days. Service was restored on 1500 UTC 5 September 2005.

A 2 metre CW transatlantic beacon is operating on 144.400 MHz,+-0.5 kHz transmitting with an ERP of 2.2 kW and beaming 60 degrees.

A 2 metre FM beacon transmitts audio Morse on 146.31 MHz. This beacon has been on the air since 14 September 1986 and has been used to study seasonal variability in local VHF propagation. It also serves as a bench mark for repeater antenna receiving performance in the region.

A long wave beacon is in operation on 137.7770 kHz
