Amateur Radio Tid Bits

Hello all, I hope that you and yours had a great week.
How did you do in last weekends CQ Worldwide DX Contest?
I was able to get on Sunday morning around 1am for an hour after
finishing some Homework. Then it was sleepy time until the wife woke me
to get up for church.
Don't forget HALLOWEEN is Saturday night, so watch out for the kids out and about Trick or Treating
should you go out.
For those of you who like spooky stuff check out this NASA Video. Halloween Solar Storms
Don't forget about this weekends special event(s) and contest(s):

=======================================================================================================================
I hope that you all were able to make some Dx contacts this past week.
I have been somewhat disappointed in the lack of radio traffic on 10 and 12m
being that we had a rather large sunspot this week. However, 17 and 15m were alive
with the sounds of radio traffic.
I was able to make a contact to CT9/DF1LON who was operating from Portugal
on 17m (18.152).

Emergency Broadband in a backpack
In the aftermath of a disaster, any connection to the outside world can be life-saving.
A BBC report interviewed Radio Amateur Mike Outmesguine KG6NHH on recent developments in emergency broadband communications
The BBC news item says that Mike Outmesguine, KG6NHH, has demonstrated an easy way to produce a "Network Relief Kit" - an ultra-portable method of connecting to the internet from almost any location in the world. The entire kit can be carried in a back-pack, and offers a fast enough connection to watch videos on YouTube.
In 2003-2004 the equipment cost some $40,000 but these days the whole kit, including the solar panel, is down to around $3,000.
The system works by connecting to one of three satellites orbiting the earth to get an internet connection. The receiver can then be plugged in, using ethernet cables, to a standard router, VoIP (voice over internet protocol) phone or similar devices.

Second Arecibo Observatory activation - KP4AO
After the huge success of the first activation, the Arecibo Observatory Radio Club - KP4AO will be on-the-air again this Sunday, November 1st, 2009 to commemorate 46 years of operations of still the single largest radio telescope antenna in the world.
They will also commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Arecibo Message, which was sent on November 16, 1974,in binary code and transmitted to the globular star cluster M13, for if it is received by intelligent life, to let them know about our existence.
"We had a such a great response that we had more than 100 radio hams operating the station in the Control Room taking turns", said Angel Vazquez - WP3R who works in the Observatory.
The special event will start at 9am-4pm local time (1300 - 2000 UTC) and will be on 20 meters SSB.
There will be certificates for those who make contact as well for operators. This is an activity for the whole Amateur Radio Community, so if you are near, or visiting the island you are invited. (Don't forget your ham license! It's your free pass).
KP4AO will be operated inside the Control Room, and the Visitor Center entrance will be half price.
The Arecibo Observatory, located in the city of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, is a radio telescope operated by Cornell University under a co-operative agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and works as the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC).
From it many studies and discoveries from the cosmos have been made by Nobel-Prize winners, as well made studies of the atmosphere and even used in the SETI program.

FIRST NORTH AMERICAN Summits on the air ACTIVITY DAY: NOVEMBER 14TH 2009
Summits on the Air (SOTA) is an award scheme for radio amateurs and shortwave listeners that encourages portable operation in mountainous areas. SOTA has been carefully designed to make participation possible for everyone - this is not just for mountaineers! There are awards for activators (those who ascend to the summits) and chasers (who either operate from home, a local hilltop or are even Activators on other summits). http://www.sota.org.uk/
Santa Cruz County Hams Called to Assist During Wildfires
Almost 20 years to the day since the Loma Prieta Earthquake shook California's Bay Area, a wildfire was burning through Santa Cruz County (approximately 75 miles south of San Francisco) just miles from the epicenter of the quake that delayed the 1989 World Series. Just as Amateur Radio operators responded to calls for assistance for the earthquake, 20 years later on October 25, they responded when needed for a 485 acre wildfire.

Propagation Forecast:
ARLP004 Propagation de K7RA
The propagation bulletin this week is written by Steve Nichols,
G0KYA, of the RSGB's Propagation Studies Committee in the English
county of Norfolk. K7RA is out of town and will return next week
for the November 6 Propagation Forecast Bulletin ARLP045.
Well, what a week it has been. The solar flux hit 82.3 on Tuesday,
the highest recording yet since the first observed "new cycle
sunspot" in January 2008, which was the "official" visual start of
Sunspot Cycle 24.
Even as I write this, the flux is still at 80, thanks to sunspot
region 1029, so let's hope that it is a sign of better things to
come.
The region (1029) produced several B-class solar flare events and a
single C2.2 class flare on the 28th, but luckily CQ World Wide SSB
was unaffected for the most part.
NASA's STEREO "behind" spacecraft is not showing any new spots
coming around the solar rim, but we live in hope. I was lucky enough
to record a Podcast with Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at the RSGB's
Convention in the UK where he talked about Solar Cycle 24 and the
possible effect of galactic cosmic rays on Top Band propagation. You
can hear the Podcast at, http://www.g0kya.blogspot.com.
Sunspot numbers for October 22 through 28 were 0, 30, 21, 28, 29,
29, and 26 with a mean of 23.3. 10.7 cm flux was 71.6, 72.9, 75.6,
75.5, 81.3, 81.5, and 79.9 with a mean of 76.9. Estimated planetary
A indices were 14, 8, 8, 5, 3, 3 and 2 with a mean of 6.1.
Estimated mid-latitude A indices were 12, 7, 5, 3, 3, 2 and 3 with a
mean of 5.

LEONIDS 2009: On Nov. 17th at about 2100 UT, Earth will pass through a stream of debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle, triggering an outburst of Leonid meteors. Forecasts of the peak range from 150 to 500 meteors per hour--somewhere between a "good show" and a "half storm." Observers in China, India, Japan and Indonesia are favored to see the brief but intense display. Complete details are available from NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office.

MARCONI RADIO CLUB OF NEWFOUNDLAND INC.
The 6 metre beacon (VO1ZA) operates on the campus of Memorial University and was designed and installed by members of the MUN ARC in June of 1990. It operates on a frequency of 50.0400 MHz (space) 50.0395 MHz (mark) FSK CW with 1.5 watts output to a 0.27 wave gamma fed vertical (omni). The beacon is maintained by the Marconi Radio Club of Newfoundland. Following an electrical storm, the beacon was off the air for several days. Service was restored on 1500 UTC 5 September 2005.
A 2 metre CW transatlantic beacon is operating on 144.400 MHz,+-0.5 kHz transmitting with an ERP of 2.2 kW and beaming 60 degrees.
A 2 metre FM beacon transmitts audio Morse on 146.31 MHz. This beacon has been on the air since 14 September 1986 and has been used to study seasonal variability in local VHF propagation. It also serves as a bench mark for repeater antenna receiving performance in the region.
A long wave beacon is in operation on 137.7770 kHz
